Head Start: Act Now to Protect Oral Health Standards!

As many are aware, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) issued a proposed rule in August, Reducing Federal Burden for Head Start Programs [Docket No. ACF-2026-0595], that would eliminate key oral health standards (among many other detrimental impacts). If finalized, it would end the federal requirement for daily toothbrushing in Head Start and remove requirements that programs verify children are up to date on oral health care and receive needed follow-up (45 CFR §§1302.42 and 1302.43).

Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood, and Head Start helps connect children from low-income families to preventive care. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association have submitted comments. We urge other partners in children's health and children's advocacy to consider submitting comments, as well.

Submit a comment asking ACF to retain these health standards by Tuesday, October 6 at 11:59 pm EDT.
