AAPD Introduces the Clinical Practice Safety Guide: A New Resource for Dental Teams
The Safety and Quality Improvement Committee (SQIC) is pleased to announce the launch of the Clinical Practice Safety Guide (CPSG), a new practical resource for private practices and dental teams committed to prioritizing safety in daily clinical care. The CPSG is designed to offer clear safety messages and practical templates that dental teams can easily incorporate into daily operations.
AAPD recognizes safety as an integral part of high-quality dental care. The unique responsibilities of private practice dentists, including providing care to pediatric patients and leading a dental team, led to the development of the guide. It is intended to be complementary to The Reference Manual of Pediatric Dentistry and The AAPD Safety Toolkit.
Safety topics are organized into six chapters, including:
- Safety Culture
- Safety Basics
- Documentation
- Team Safety
- Office Site Safety
- Medication Safety
Each chapter includes different sections with an outlined explanation of key concepts and best practices for each safety topic. At the end of each chapter, there is an appendix with printable templates and documents for teams to use. The CPSG also includes a complementary checklist that can be customized to fit the needs of each unique dental practice and team.
The CPSG will be a “living document” on the AAPD member’s page, and it will be updated as needed to reflect contemporary safety practices. We hope this resource helps dental practices establish, integrate, and sustain a high standard of safety for both patients and dental teams. Please contact the Research & Policy Center (rpc@aapd.org) if you have any questions.
